We’ve been there. Your LMS doesn’t talk to your CRM or your ERP systems, but you don’t have the time or budget for a big IT project. The Sales team has detailed all the training opportunities in the CRM system, but there is no easy way to track these against activity in your LMS. Your training credits are selling, but the Finance group can’t easily include the revenue in their reports to leadership. And to top it all off, the APIs don’t support all the fields that need to get passed around.

The answer? Gather the forces and go low tech. Instead of trying to come up with a master architecture of web services, identify the data each team needs on a day-to-day basis. Approach it from a business flow perspective and accept a few manual routines in the short term. The payoffs are many. Finance and Sales have the data they need, your training team gets credit for the revenue they’re bringing in, and you just shaved weeks off the eventual IT project when your budget and the APIs catch up to your expectations.

Navis has powerful tools—Cornerstone Enterprise Edition, Salesforce, and SAP; but our journey emphasized the value of staying within our circle of competence. Come and listen to how we waded through the minefields with persistence and common sense and came out heroes.

Note: this was first presented at the CEdMA Fall Conference on Oct 16-17.
