My First Impressions as President

Posted By Administration, Thursday, May 30, 2013

As I write this first President’s Blog I have to start with a big thank you to our outgoing board members for their significant contribution over the years, providing leadership and enthusiasm that has helped to improve the value of CEdMA for all members. Thank you Pat Durante, Bob Lucas, and Jon Regan! We will miss you but know you will stay active and involved!

I am very excited to write about our 2013 Spring Conference, held April 23 and 24 at the Microsoft Mountain View location. Thank you to Microsoft for sharing your wonderful facilities and to Lynn Marie Viduya, West Conference Trustee, for organizing such a great agenda and activities.

The CEdMA conference is unique in that this is THE ONLY conference focused 100% on the business challenges faced by education managers at technology companies. In addition, the content at the conference is selected by those education managers, and presented by education managers. In the words of one attendee when asked what the most valuable part of the conference was for him:

The two days were packed with interesting content and activities, such as:

· Keynote address from Cushing Anderson, Program Vice President, Project-Based Services at IDC on the Impact of Next Gen Learners: Changes that Impact Technical Education

· Six content-rich member-driven presentations – including:

o Learning Market Trends: How to Respond as Learning Leader Strategically and Tactically

o Challenges and Opportunities of Reorganizations

o Panel Discussion: Taking the First Steps to Measuring Impact on the Business

o Marketing through Social Media: Cast Study

o Contribute to the Bottom Line or Support Product Growth: How do you Balance Both Successfully?

o Challenges Education Businesses Must Address to Support the SaaS Market

· 2013 CEdMA Impact Award presentation to Terry Vyas of Eloqua – Congratulations Eloqua!

· 2012 CEdMA Service Award presentation to Pat Durante – Congratulations Pat!

· Vendor Pavilion with nine vendors participating

· Tons of networking opportunities

· Great dinner!

There were sixty-three attendees from thirty-nine different companies. Many of these participants were returning for a second, third and, in one case, 172nd CEdMA conference. Why do people attend the CEdMA conferences? Let’s hear it in their own words - here is what some participants said about the conference:

All of the spring conference presentations are now available to all of our members in the CEdMA Goldmine. I encourage all to download and review this valuable content.

The 2013 CEdMA Impact Award was presented to Terry Vyas of Eloqua in recognition of their efforts to restructure Eloqua University so that it truly aligned with the needs and expectations of the SaaS customer. Eloqua’s learnings from this project, which they pass on to all CEdMA members, are:

  1. Customers expect the benefits they enjoy from a SaaS based product such as low cost and ease of use, to apply to the education related to that product.
  2. An "All you can eat” education model, while currently unconventional, can be highly profitable.
  3. Discipline and rigor in development and delivery benefits you and your customers.

As a result of successful implementation of this project Eloqua University provided more value to their customers and realized:

  • Revenue increase of 83%
  • Margin increase of 136%
  • AAEP holder increase of 45%
  • Session registration increase of 45%

One of the most meaningful moments for me was presenting out-going President Pat Durante with the 2012 CEdMA Service Award.

Pat and I have served on the CEdMA Board together for four years. Pat was the East Conference Trustee from 2007 to 2009. He then served as the President from 2009 to 2013. His leadership on the Board continually unified and strengthened the Board. Pat has an unbridled commitment to CEdMA- working hard to consistently improve the organization and its programs. With Pat it is not about what HE can gain, it is about what the CEdMA members can gain through his work and the work of others to improve the value of this organization. Congratulations Pat! And again thank you for your service these past four years.

I look forward to connecting with you all virtually over the next several months. Please feel free to contact me at if you have questions, concerns or ideas.

I also look forward to seeing you all in Boston in the fall. Watch for details on the 2013 Fall Conference, coming soon!

Jesse Finn

Thank you for all the kind words Jesse - nice job on the conference write-up and best of luck in your new role!

P.S. I think "172nd conference" might be a typo and I thought it was the 2013 service award since it says 2013 on the plaque - but not a huge issue.

Pat - 172nd conference is not a type - that was an actual comment although I think a joke (Ken????). And there is some confusion around the award but we went with what was on the application (I never saw the plaque!). Hard to know if the year applies to when the service was rendered or when the award was given. This way we have covered both! Anyway - a well deserved award. Congrats.

Pat and All -- You are all correct -- it is the 2013 Service Award for Pat!! I did not catch some of the typos in the Blog. And ACTUALLY, most of the credit goes to Liz for her fine creative writing on this!
